Tenkara fly fishing, meaning "from heaven" or "from the skies", is a traditional type of fishing in Japan that uses bamboo hand rod which is 11 ft to 15 ft long. It originated 200 years ago and was even made by some mountain folks into a popular game fishing in the later 20th century.
Traditional Tenkara uses bamboo hand rod, yarn of horse tail hair for taper line, and line of silk for tippet. Fly patterns were soft hackle which cover mostly beneath the surface film. Modern Tenkara uses glass fiber or carbon hand rod in 3:7 reflex for taper line and 5:5 reflex for level line. Lines are now made out of fuloro carbon and fly patterns welcome western dry fly patterns as well.
The unique characteristic of this rod is that it has no fly line or reel which made it different to the Western style. What it has is a telescopic rod that is portable.
