He is one of the founders of the Rinpa School of Japanese painting. The school had been primarily funded by the merchant town elite and the old Kyoto aristocratic families when it was launched during the 17th century.
Tawaraya Sotatsu started as being a fan painter in the Kyoto Prefecture. He later on ventured into decorated papers for calligraphy. This was the time he met the master calligrapher, Honami Koetsu, who commissioned him to paint gold and silver designs fro his writing. Honami Koetsu is Sotatsu's co-founder for Rinpa.
