These high-ankled and toe-separated socks are considered to be the traditional Japanese socks. Known as the "tabi," they are specially made with the toe separate from the rest because of the traditional Japanese slippers called the geta or the zori.  These footwears are usually worn with the traditional costume of Japan, which is the kimono. 

The traditional tabi is not made of some elastic cloth like the modern socks. They are sewn using a non-elastic material, with the sheen of silk or stain. They are also open behind the leg, with fasteners for easy wearing. 

These seem to be the pattern behind some styles of the modern socks, wherein the toe is separated.
