Ukiyo-e is not the only the known art movement that existed in Japan. There was also the sumi-e or the art of ink washing. Also called as literati painting, sumi-e is the Japanese art of ink and brush painting. It is called as literati, because the practice had been the art of the highly educated people or the literate ones.
One of the notable names that arose in the course of its artistic history in Japan is Sesshu Toyo. Shown here is his very own self-portrait, employing the techniques of the brush and ink that he had acquired through the years.
