The Sapporo Snow Festival is not the only event that travelers can enjoy in Hokkaido Prefecture during winter. Every February, winter visitors can enjoy the Snow Light Path Festival in the port city of Otaru.
Also known as the Otaru Yuki Akari no Michi in Japanese, the festival aims to give some warmth and light in the season of snow. Two main areas are filled with lanterns and lightes specifically for the festival. The places are the Unga Kaijo area and the Temiyasen Kaijo area. To join the bright festivities, shop owners also put some lighted lanterns in front of their stores or restaurants.
