Naginatajutsu is a Japanese martial art using a traditional Japanese blade called ‘Naginata’. Naginata was known to be used by the onna-bugeisha, literally ‘female martial artist’. The Naginata is a pole with a blade on its end. The weapon was used by warriors and eventually women to defend her home while the men were away at war, and the usage was thought of as a feminine art.
Naginata was used by several prominent women in Japanese history such as Tomoe Gozen, Hangaku Gozen and Nakano Takeko. In modern times, the Naginatajustsu is still being practiced in a new form called ‘atarashii Naginata’.
