Playing with fire is a very dangerous thing, but in this place in Japan, walking on fire is part of their tradition.
Nagatoro Fire Festival or Himatsuri is an annual festival during March. It is one of the major religious rites for the coming of spring in Nagatoro. Nagatoro is located in the northwest Tokyo.
During the festival, you will see the barefoot monks holding a prayer board or a talisman while walking through the fire. It is believed to bring fortune and protection against bad luck. They also believe that it will purify their minds and their bodies.
The annual ritual is being held at the Choshozan Fudoji temple.
