Japanese women of long time ago already had undergarments called the nagajuban. No, it is not like the modern women's underwear. It is often made of cotton or synthetic silk, usually white in color. It is worn under the kimono and is sewn like a robe, and just like the kimono.

Aside from being an underwear, the nagajuban also absorbs all the sweat and other impurities from the body, preventing them from getting to the delicate fabric of the kimono, which is usually luxurious silk. 

Some nagajubans have collars that can be replaced by other fabrics, to provide a good combination with the actual kimono.
