Mizuhiki is that special paper cord usually tied around envelopes given on special occasions like wedding or birthdays, with each knot containing a particular meaning. It can take many form such as that of animals, boats or certain symbols, which are believed to bring luck.
The history of the use of Mizuhiki started as a means of tying samurai warrior’s hair during the 1600’s, and goes back as far as 607 AD when a Japanese delegate presented a gift from China to the Japanese Emperor.
The gift is decorated with red and white twines that symbolizes a safe journey. Since then, the Japanese tradition of presenting a gift box with a Mizuhiki knot started and has been passed down through generations.
