While machines are primarily responsible for producing fountain pens (or pens, in general) nowadays, there is a craftsman in Tottori, Japan, who makes pens in such a traditional, handmade way.
Meet Harumi Tanaka from Tottori City in Tottori Prefecture. who creates barrels of Hakase Fountain Pens manually. His creations are usually made of celluloid and water buffalo horn. Watch as Mr. Tanaka demonstrates the process of creating them, which includes carving the entirety from caps to their product body itself, fashioning the pens, attaching the nib and testing the pen, and even checking the smoothness of the barrell.
