These lovely lacquerwares have been displayed at the Portland Japanese Garden in the Oregon state of America. The exhibit was entitled, Re-discovering Lacquer: 12 Artists Reinvent a Timeless Tradition.
Urushi or the Japanese word for lacquer has been used as a material by artists around Japan, since the old times. It has been a well-loved material because it preserves other artworks like tools, tablewares, furnitures, architectures and others. Aside from just preserving, the lacquer also provides protection in the artworks themselves. It also gives them a smooth and classy finish.
The exhibition featured works from traditional Japanese lacquer artists.
