Shikebiki is a technique originally used in dyeing kimono. The artisan uses a brush to create a very fine stripe pattern. Since only a few people wear kimono nowadays, there are people who are concerned that the skill may disappear in line with the seemingly disappearing tradition. To prevent it from happening, there are groups of people who are now using it in things that many people can use-- scarves.
These scarves are created in Kyoto. A Kyoto shikebiki master paints each scarf with their hands. His skill in this craft is passed down to his family. The artist uses his specialized brushes and pays attention to the details in each scarf.
