Summer in Japan is known for the numerous natsu matsuri odori or the summer festival dances.

The Koenji Awa Odori happens every last weekend of August, at the area of Koenji, located at the Suginami ward, west of Shinjuku, Tokyo. This Koenji Awa Dance Festival is said to gather around 12,000 teams of dancers to perform in front of around 1.2 million travelers each year. Being said this, this awa odori is considered to be the largest dance festival outside Tokushima Prefecture.

To maintain the quality of the dances, the organizers of the said event is imposing a competition among the dance troupes.
