Invented as a casual footwear during the 20th century, the jika-tabi literally translates to tabi that contact the ground. The jika-tabi is actually designed from the traditional split-toe Japanese socks, called the tabi. Because the jika-tabis are worn without additional footwear, they literally "touch the ground." This is made possible by the rubber sole included under the sock-like footwear.
This footwear innovation had been credited to Tokujiro Ishibashi, who is the brother of Bridgestone Corporation founder, Shojiro Ishibashi. Because of the comfort of the tabi and the durability of the rubber soles, these are usually used by farmers, construction workers and other laborers. But there had also been jika-tabis designed for fashionistas in Japan.
