Being the official currency of Japan, it is said that the Japanese Yen is the third most traded money in the foreign exchange market. Together with the United States dollar, the Euro, and the United Kingdom Pound Sterling, the Japanese Yen is also one of the reserved currencies in the world.
The Japanese Yen was a product of the unification efforts of the Meiji government. Before the Meiji restoration, the various feudal lords of Japan had their own currency and money, making the denominations incompatible across Japan. Hence, the New Currency Act of 1871 was established.
