One typical thing and tradition you can find in Japan are the Japanese garden and its circles around stones, grass mounds and circles. These circles are akin to a wave emanating from a stone when you throw it from a distance or anything that disturbs the calm water surface. The circle mean enlightenment and the stones and other random mounds and shapes symbolizes happiness. To make these garden types, a rake is used to make wave-like patterns on the gravel that surrounds irregularly shaped stones.
In Kyoto you can visit such a garden in a Zen garden complex in Daitokuji temple.
