Bonsai is the Japanese art of growing trees in stylized trays or containers.

The word bonsai is said to have come from the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese characters comprising this word. The original Chinese reading is penzai. This art of plant growing is said to be based on contemplation as the primary purpose. The growers of bonsai, who are also the trimmers and "artists" of the craft are said to pass on the power of contemplation or reflection to all the viewers of their zen works.

To grow a bonsai, one plants them first on normal soil. Once it has reached the desired height, they are then transferred to beautiful pots.
