This painting of a maple tree was made by Hasegawa Tohaku on a sliding door or fusuma. This had been the main practice that had been thought in the Hasegawa School of Japanese Painting, which he founded in the 16th century. The style of the school was said to have been largely based on the style of another school named Kano School, which also specialized in sliding door paintings. This was because Tohaku was actually a student of Kano Eitoku, the founder of the said school.
Being a small school, the students were mainly composed of the apprentices of Tohaku and other masters from the Kano school.
