Artist Tokujiro Nishi studied art with Japanese artist Masao Hato, founder of the Sakujitsu-kai artists. The group was created to continue the tradition of oil painting, re-discovered in Japan by American art historian Ernest Fenollosa. When he visited Japan in 1878, he was impressed with the beauty of Japanese art, which had been neglected after the Meiji Restoration. Fenollosa worked to bring about a renaissance of Japanese art. Mr. Nishi's paintings are thick with impasto and rich in color like those of the Sakujitsu-kai artists.
A resident of Tokyo, Japan, Mr. Nishi's work has been exhibited in Japan, Europe and the United States. He was twice awarded the Puhrubu Prize at the Sakujitsu-kai Exhibitions and the Okamoto Prize.
The paintings in the exhibition are on loan from Mr. Nishi's son, Ayumu Yokoyama, and daughter-in-law, Dr. Kristine Mulhorn, an associate teaching professor in the health administration department at Drexel University.
