Art has also been designed to be utilized in Japan. One example is the byoubu, of the traditional Japanese folding panels or dividers. Mainly used to divide big rooms into portions or to enclose private areas, these panels had been a good venue for the decorative paintings and calligraphy works of a lot of Japanese artist.
Though it originated in China, the art of folding screens is one of those art movements that has already been Japanized. The term byobu has actually acquired a figurative meaning, which is "protection from wind."
