The bow is just one of the thousand ways that Japan has practiced to show their world-renowned politeness to the universe. The Japanese bow is actually a gesture that starts from the waist and not just the head. They have even devised ways on how to bow, depending on the situation and the greeting in which the bow is attached to.
They actually have 3 kinds of bow, used in different occasions. The one on the photo is the saikeirei bow, which includes bending of the torso at an angle of 45 degrees.
