The Tamagotchi rose to fame immediately after its release in November 1996 in Japan, and in May 1997 around the world. Being your handy digital pet, the Tamagotchi proved to be the ancestors of Digimon. This wonder digital friend was created by Akihiro Yokoi and Aki Maita. Released by Bandai, the name was said to be a play on the words, "tamago," or egg, and "watch."

During the game's 20th anniversary, Bandai announced that it has already sold a total of 82 million units, and growing.

So how is the game played? Upon activation, a player starts with having an egg. The egg later on hatches into a pet. The "pet" is like a real living being in the sense that it needs to be fed, to be happy and even disciplined.
