In 2015, Denso, one of Japan's leading automotive parts manufacturers, introduced a project which merged both traditional and innovative technology.
The project included three technical high schools in Japan, namely, the Yamagata Prefectural Nagai Technical High School, Aichi Prefectural Kariya Technical Senior High School, and the DENSO Technical Skills Academy. They are challenged to develop one of Denso's robotic arms, which is an industrial multi-joint type into something playful and interesting. What should be the task of the robot? At the end of the project, it should learn how to play the Japanese traditional toy, kendama.
With the robot's existing joint structure which has the same movement procedures as the human arm, could these high school students be able to program the robot to catch the ball of the kendama?
