For all those motion-detected games, Wii has been revolutionary.

Released on November 19, 2006 by Nintendo, Wii went into the market as an innovative game console and competed with Xbox 360 (Microsoft) and PlayStation 3 (Sony PS3). For Wii's handheld pointing device and 3D movement detection, they introduced the Wii Remote controller. Games for Wii can also be downloaded. 

According to Shigeru Miyamoto, who is the game designer of Nintendo, the concept for Wii originated from the company's desire to incorporate a whole new player experience and interaction. 

Nintendo said that the name cam from the pronoun 'we,' which pertains to more than one person. They also said that the spelling, having two lower-case letter 'i' can also be seen as two people standing up, while playing.
