Konica had been one of the forerunners in the analog imaging and optical industry, not only in Japan but around the globe. The company logo is best recognized from the half-circle rainbow image.
The company was said to have started in the photography business, even before Kodak, in 1873. It all started with Rokusaburo Sugiura, who sold imaging materials in his pharmacy store in Konishiya Rokubē, which was said to be the biggest player in the medicine industry.
After 5 years, Sugiura launched a new photography shope named Konishi, and started selling cameras. It was only until 1948 that the company released their very own Konica I company, which later on became the company's name.
