Money, said to be the root of all evil, is not all that bad. Especially when you use it to donate to shrines.
The Japanese shrines are now going digital, refusing to be left behind as establishments try to make e-purses a norm in the lives of the Japanese.
With multiple establishments going cashless, the shrines also tried their luck due to popular demand. No spare change to throw at the Saisen-bako? Just swipe, and you can donate any amount of money you want.
The shrines’ effort is to meet the increasing demand of credit card users. The Edy is a prepaid rechargeable contactless smart card. At the shrine, the Edy terminal was decked out in a wooden box to ‘blend in’.
