Asuka Kamiya, 12, a sixth-grader from Jozan Elementary School in Anjo, Aichi Prefecture, has been granted a patent for her can-recycling bin invention, which uses a magnet to automatically separate steel and aluminum containers.
She created this self-separating recycle bin as an assignment on her science project when she was in grade five. It was her grandpa, who is an owner of a grocery store, who inspired her for the project. Her grandpa had to separate aluminum cans from steel cans. It was her desire to lessen the work of his grandpa.
The recycle bin that she created is made with plastic boards that measures 31 sq cm and 91 cm tall. It has two compartments: one for the aluminum cans and the other is for the steel cans.
