Debuing in September 2006, Yujiro Kushida started his professional wrestling and mixed martial arts career with the help of trainers Nobuhiko Takada and Yoshihiro Tajiri. His signature moves, such as the Buzzsaw Kick and the Handspring back elbow, were adopted from Tajiri, and the Cross armbreaker from Nobuhiko Takada.

Known as KUSHIDA at the New Japan Pro Wrestling, he has a record of 8 fights, wherein he won 2 by knockout, 3 by submission, and 1 by decision.  He has several other nicknames such as "Hustle Supernova", "New Japan (Junior) Supernova", "Time Splitter", and even "The Ace of the Jrs". He also tag-teamed with Alex Shelley, and became IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions.
