Seventy percent (70%) of Japan's total land area is actually covered with mountains. And being a country near Siberia, the country has been greatly governed by the Siberian air mass, the coldest air system from the Arctic. Because of this, some parts of the country, particularly those closest to Siberia, has almost four months of snow every year. Hence, skiing and snowboarding has been a popular sport and recreational activity in Japan. Moreover, Japan has also been the first Asian country to host the Winter Olympics because of its famous skiing and snowboarding resorts.
