Located in Yokoami, Sumida, Tokyo, the Ryogoku Kokugikan or the Ryogoku Sumo Hall has been the venue of the honbasho or the major sumo wrestling tournaments in Japan. There are three major tournaments in Japan, namely the Hatsu (New Year) Honbasho every January, the Natsu (Summer) Honbasho in May, the Aki (Autumn) Honbasho in September. The structure was introduced in 1985 to be able to hold around 13,000 participants and guests.
On the months when there are no sumo tournaments, the venue also holds other sporting events like boxing, pro wrestling and sometimes, even musical events such as concerts and live performances.
