Sumo has been one of the traditional sports in Japan. The Japanese characters consisting the word sumo literally means "striking one another."

To be a professional sumo wrestler in Japan, one needs to be a member of a heya (literally meaning "room"), wherein he is trained by oyakatas or former sumo wrestlers. The training and all the rules governing the sport are being implemented by the Japan Sumo Association, making sure that each will be strictly followed.
