On January 27, Japan witnessed a sumo ceremony that changed the history of sumo wrestling. After 19 years, only this year did Japan promote a sumo wrestler to the highest professional rank called the yokozuna. The ceremony happened at the Meiji Jingu shrine in Shibuya, Tokyo and was attended b a lot of sumo enthusiasts.
Yokozuna's are not necessarily the strongest ōzeki but instead, the most influential patrons are chosen. And the minimum requirement for a Yokozuna promotion are two consecutive championships.
Currently, there are actually just 4 yokozuna's in Japan, three of them are actually from Mongolia. The promotion ceremony makes Kisenosato the only Japanese yokozuna in Japan.
