Freediving is a type of underwater diving that depends on the ability of the diver to hold his or her breath in the water, rather than using breathing equipment. Most Japanese free divers were inspired by Jacques Mayol.
It has also been practised as both a sport or an occupation. Working as a freediver was said to have started with Japanese and Korean grandmothers because centuries ago, women started dipping into the ocean holding their breaths in order to get food. Years later, women are still working to bring goods for their homes.
In terms of freediving competitions, they consist of three major categories: the first one will be the time. It measures how long a diver can stay underwater while holding his or her breath. Next is distance, which measures how far the diver can swim while holding breath. Finally, the most popular one is depth, which shows how deep the diver can reach while holding a breath. Here's an overview of the Freediving paradise in Miyako island of Okinawa, as shown by MSPO.
