Don't be freaked out by this tiny critter when you go to Japan.
This is the Yanbaru whiskered bat, a type of vesper bat scientifically known as the Myotis yanbarensis. This bat is classified as an endemic species, meaning it is rare, and can only be found in the three islands of the Ryuku Archipelago in Japan: Okinawa, Amami Oshima, and Tokunoshima. The Yanbaru whiskered bat got its name from the Yanbaru forest in Okinawa where it is often found. This species was classified as critically endangered because it is only restricted to small fragments of the remaining forests. The Yanbaru whiskered bat is the only tree hollow-dwelling bat known to be present on Okinawa.
