For Japanese child care centers, play is part of the work. The government actually encourages play to be a part of a large community as many of parents believe that this is part of the learning process.
The Japanese child care center is a good blend of discipline, skill, and loads of fun. Kids enter the building taking off their outdoor shoes and wearing indoor shoes. Before the class starts, kids socialize in a room with kids from all levels. At the waiting area, kids can play whatever game they want from the wide variety of toys in the kindergarten. Once the bell rings, kids are separated into different classrooms. The classes include music, and arts and crafts. The skills they have learned from these classes will be showcased at the school's annual pageant. The kids are taught to take care of their own stuff, whether it may be an instrument, a painting palette, or the utensils they use for lunch. At the end of the day, there is more play time for kids to interact with each other.
