Tokyo officials found a not so exciting discovery and instead discovered a macabre find when they stumbled upon the mummified body of Sogen Kato - Tokyo's oldest resident. The officials are supposed to congratulate Mr.Kato on his 111th birthday. They became suspicious of what has been the consistent effort of the family to thwart them from visiting the old man. His granddaughter even told them that he doesn't want to see anybody.
According to Tomoko Iwamatsu, the city's official from Adachi ward, Mr.kato's family repeatedly chased them away. The officials forced their way into the man's house and found a grisly discovery - a mummified corpse wearing pajamas and underwear with blanket cover. The old man's relatives told the police that Mr.kato secluded himself in his room to become a living buddha.
The dead man's family has been receiving 9.5 million yen or ($109, 000 or $70, 000) via the widower's pension payments and the bank account of Mr. Kato after his wife died sometime 6 years ago.
The police are now studying to investigate and file fraud charges against Mr.Kato's family.
