Tokyo may have been one of the most urbanized cities in Japan. Who would have thought that such a metropolitan area can house several species of animals? Located in Taitou, Tokyo, Japan is the Ueno Zoo. This 14.3-hectare or 35-acre zoo houses around 3,000 animals, comprising over 400 species, including a Sumatran tiger, a Western Lowland Gorilla, California Sea Lions, and Pandas. The zoo is managed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Before the war, the place was originally assigned by the National Museum of Natural History as a menagerie or a place where animals were kept.
