Japan has its own set of world-class contemporary artists. One of them is Takashi Murakami, a Tokyo-based artist who has successfully blended contemporary art, the fine arts and commercial media. To further describe the art fusion he created, he invented the word, superflat. Because of the "super flatness," of the resulting artworks, the line between the high, the low and the commercial arts have now been blurred. The word is also used to describe the smoooth transition of the Japanese art traditions and the post-war art, which reflects the Japanese culture and society after that time. He is now using the word to describe his style.
