The Takaashigani or the Japanese spider crab is the world's largest arthropod, with its leg span reaching an enormous 5.5 meters (18 feet) from claw to claw. In addition to this, the body or the carapace of the Japanese spider crab can grow up to 40 centimeters or 16 inches. Overall, the takaashigani can weigh up to a maximum of 19 kilograms or 42 pounds.
The Japanese name is actually composed of three words: taka, ashi, gani. The first word, taka, means "tall." The second word, ashi, means "legs." The last word, gani, is actually an onomatopoeaic conjugation of kani or the Japanese term for "crab."
