Being an archipelago, Japan has a lot of islands and surrounding bodies of water. Because of this, Japan also has a lot of suspension bridges to keep the country "united," in terms of transportation.
The Shimanami Kaido is one of those bridges in Japan that "connects" not only one but eight islands. Also known as the Nishiseto Expressway, the bridge spans 60 kilometers from Japan's main island, Honshu, passing over six small islands of Seto Inland Sea, and finally arriving at the smallest main island of Shikoku. But the Shimanami Kaido is not alone in transporting people from these islands. There are actually two other bridges but the Nishiseto Expressway is the only bridge that can be travelled by foot and by bicycle.
