There are around 1200 Shikas, also known as Sika deers in the Nara Prefecture. The shikas are one of the few deer species that retain the white spots on their brown skins upon maturity. This unique characteristic vary in different places in Japan. Another uniquely Shika characteristic is being highly vocal. It is said that sika deers can have over 10 individual sounds, ranging from soft hums to heavy shouts.
One of the world famous places to see the Japanese Sika deers is the Nara Park. The deers in this park are very tame and would let humans approach them. They also have a special talent of bowing their heads to be fed by special deer cookies, that's why they are called the "bowing deer" of Japan.
