Nyango Star is a celebrity mascot in Japan known for playing heavy metal music drums.  Nyango star is an apple inhibited by the spirit of the dead cat. The name Nyan came from the Japanese word "Nyan" for the cry "Meow", Ringo (the name of Ringo Starr who is a drummer of Beatles,) Ringo means apple in Japanese.  On October 2, 2018, Nyango Star became popular when his video went viral in the US and soon after the mascot became an instant meme.

The mascot represents the city of Kuroishi known for its agricultural goods such as apples. Ken Takahi, the city mayor of Kuroishi admitted that his town is shrinking and the population is aging. To draw more tourist in Kuroishi, he contacted a Tokyo based company "Being" that made "Nyango Star" themed accessories such as a cardholder, mug, T-shirt, bag,  The person's identity behind the hot custom is unknown except the person he is known as the creator of the character.
