The Nousagi or the Japanese Hare is a native hare species from Japan. It can be found in all the main islands of Japan except in Hokkaido. They like to live in mountainous or hilly areas, but they can also be found roaming the forests or brushy areas. It has adapted well to the ever changing environment that they have thrived even when their former habitats have been occupied by humans.
The Nousagi has a reddish-brown color. In areas with heavy snowfall, the Japanese hare turns to white during autumn, and maintains that color until spring, when the reddish-brown color returns.
