Nihon Ten or the Japanese Marten can be seen in Southern Hokkaido and also in Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. There are also some which are spotted on Mount Tanzawa in the Kanto region.
They are mammal creatures under the marten genus, and are very much related to the sable. Male martens are generally bigger than females, with an average length of half a meter, in addition to an average of 20-centimeter-long tail .
They are usually living in a broad leaved forest and are considered to be territorial, with each marten owning a land based on food availability. They are also omnivorous, meaning they eat meat and fruits but generally prefer fish, frogs and small birds.
Two subspecies of marten exist in Japan:
1) the M. m. melampus, which lives on several of the Japanese islands
2) the M. m. tsuensis, which is only found on Tsushima Island
