Manhole covers could just be pieces of metal that people simply ignore and just walk onto. However, in Japan, they found these around 500 millimeter metal circles as great materials to carry some local art. Hence in Japan, the manhole cover art has been born.
Since manholes are found anywhere in Japan, they decided to make it an element of each place's identity. Every city or town in Japan has their own design for these covers, representing the industries, local cultures, cuisines, native products and famous practices and events in each prefecture. Japan even holds an annual manhole summit where each prefecture discovers the new trends about these pieces of metal.
