In 2014, a Japanese artist named Azuma Makoto has sent an enclosed fifty-year old bonsai tree, to the outer space. In cooperation with John Powell of the JP Aerospace, the mission, entitled Exbiotanica, has launched a white pine bonsai tree, encased in a carbon-fiber frame, and an ikebana or flower arrangement of orchids, hydrangeas, lilies and irises into the world of the unknown. It was brought to space by a specially-made balloon, launched in the Black Rock Desert in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. The resulting images where breathtaking, a mix of the Earth's blue color, the blackness of space and the vivid colors of the plants.
