Hokusai is not the only ukiyo-e artist in Japan. During his lifetime from 1891 to 1955, Koshiro Onchi had created his own art movement in the 20th century. He called it the Sosaku-hanga movement, which focused on the concept of self. Sosaku-hanga is all about artworks that are "self-drawn," "self-carved," "self-printed," and most important of all for "self-expression." Koshiro Onichi believed that artworks are products of the self, and not merely representations of the society, the culture and the outside world. Becuase of this, his works have been known to have that abstract style of paintings, and an intellectual sense to it.
