Kiji or the Green Pheasant is actually Japan's national bird. It can be found in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and even in the smaller islands of the Land of the Rising Sun.
Male and female kijis can easily be spotted in the wild. The more green-colored ones are the males. They also have a purple-colored hood. The females have a more brownish color.
These colorful birds also tend to be a bit vain. During late July to early August, male green pheasants (rooster) molt their feathers. It is very hard to spot them during this season as they would go into "hiding" until their feathers have fully grown back.
