One of the national symbols of Japan, the Kamoshika or the Japanese serow is a goat-antelope that can be found in the dense woodlands of Honshu. They are even-toed ungulate mammals.
Their colors range from black to whitish, and it lightens as the summer season comes. Because serows are known for their sure-footedness in mountain cliffs, serow footprints are marked on omamori charms made to help students pass their exams.
At some point in history, the Japanese serow was hunted to near-extinction. the Japanese government eventually passed a law to protect the serows from extinction. This was made in 1955. Eventually, the population of the serow has increased.
