The island of Iriomote in Japan is the second largest island in the Okinawa Prefecture, with the main Okinawa island as the first. This lovely island, south of Japan, is the home to the Iriomote Wildcat, which is a subspecie of a bigger and more beautifully-spotted cat, the leopard. This subspecie is said to be found exclusively in the said island. As of 2008, the Iriomote Wildcat has been on the red list of endangered species. In Japanese, this leopard is called the Iriomote yamaneko, which is composed of two words. Yama means "mountain," and neko means "cat."
